Don't miss Red Sun.......

This is a "new adult" romance. Normally I would avoid such fare, but when I downloaded the sample and began reading I was immediately engrossed. This book is just so good that I bought it before I finished the sample. Ms. St. Pierre weaves such a good coming of age romance that I threw out my preconceived notions and buckled my safety belt for the ride.

The good:

The story revolves around Solei, a young aa woman who is still suffering the effects of a family tragedy, I love /loathe this heroine at first, she was self-centered and immature, but aren't we all at her age? I actually found myself loving more and loathing less the more I read. Ms. St. Pierre has a special talent that is missing in many new adult romances; allowing her heroine to grow without her seeming to make decisions beyond her years.
My vision of Solei, actress Keke Palmer

One of the reasons that I don't enjoy young adult or new adult is that the characters are to insightful,  wise, or have the ability (in my opinion) to make decisions that are beyond their years because the people who write them are older and write from an aged point of view. Or, the character doesn't actually grow, but the characters around them just accept their annoying behavior because the heroine is just so "special."

But in R.S. you read Solei making poor decisions, we know why she makes them because she tells us and then we watch through her eyes as she deals with the consequences of her immaturity. By the end of the novel you can tell a difference in the character from where she began, its quite beautiful.

The Men:

Elan
Élan- The older brother. Every fantasy I've ever had involves a guy like this, the "hot boy" that shows this one girl his softer side. He's wildly romantic, sexy, and bold. If only I wasn't married, and almost forty, and he was REAL. Bow-chica-wow-wow.

But I digress.

Jolon- the strong silent type with long dark hair and muscular body. Dang this woman can
Jolon
write, because, Uhm yeah, I imagined myself brushing his long raven locks, the act being so erotic. Damn

I wanted her to end up with both brothers, kinky, yes, but a girl can dream! In the end Solei had to choose and break my heart and the heart of the other guy. Read it to find out who she chose, you won't be disappointed.

Fav character:

Ruthanne- I smiled whenever she showed up in a scene.

Fav line- I have two:

"The rain seemed to be the catalyst- the spark that lit the flame between us. Something about it made him irresistible to me and it seemed to have the same affect on him" pg. 323

"Every time he touched me some pale new I lost my breath- apparently my feet were no exception to the rule. Any uncharted area on my body seemed to short circuit when his skin came in contact with mine." pg. 189

The bad:

I want more of Jolon and Elan; Solei can come to, but no offense Kaya, Elan is mine!

Overall:

I smiled a lot as I read this book. A lot.

Loving Zeek & Thorn

I was so excited when Dicey Grenor announced this novella on her facebook page. I am a huge fan of the Narcoleptic Vampire series and of the author herself. Mrs. Grenor is a good at creating smart, sassy, sexy characters that are complex, yet endearing. So, I knew this novella was going to be in my Kindle library as soon as it came out.

I was gifted this novella from Mrs. Grenor, but my opinion of her work was not influenced by her generosity.

So let's get into this review:

Zeek is one of Willow's grooms, the lone sister in the troupe of men that made Willow a master vampiress.  She loves her second life of health and strength after a lifetime of ostracism and illness. Enter Thorn, a preacher left behind after the rapture. A man trying to live right after a lifetime of doing so many people wrong.

When the two meet Thorn tries to resist the temptation of his favorite drug and Zeek struggles to show Thorn the real her, in all her glory.

Zeek's spirit is beautiful despite being battered over an over by abuse and ignorance. Her loyalty, strong beliefs and loving nature make it hard not to fall for her character. At first I didn't like Thorn, how could I? He really didn't have that many redeeming qualities at first, he's so concerned with her appearance, but then we get to watch him fall in love with someone he totally doesn't expect. He sees Zeek's spirit and falls in love with HER, not her body or what she can do for him. But the raw person inside, which is all she ever wanted in a lover.

I'm just saying:

The adult scene in this book is may test some of you, but they are not too graphic and done with class. Personally I found them to be tender and sweet, the slow burn of eroticism is still there, but handled with such care that it makes you smile affectionately cause you understand the motivations and the elation that the characters fell when they finally get down to the dirty.

Favorite character:
Vance. I have a girl crush on her now. Yeah she's sexy and can kick your ass, but she's also nurturing and true to herself and her friends.

Monroe. OK, maybe it's the perv in me but his line, "It took me two hours, but I finally put the Mrs. to bed" made my insides feel good.

Favorite line:
"The only thing worse than a horny vampire is a hungry one"

Complaints: I wanted more!

Overall:

This book is a blast!  Sexy, raw, and human. The real humanity, not that fluff and stuff of gallant pretty people that pay lip service. But, the humanity that makes you look in the mirror and tell yourself to be a more accepting person. Read it, challenge yourself to expand your literary horizons, you might discover that we're ALL really not that far apart from one another.

Amped: An "average" novel by Daniel H. Wilson

Set in the future, "Amped" tells the story of a world where people can be enhanced by technology; have ADHD? Amp it up and you'll be the brightest kid in your class; want to be the next Jordan? Amp it up and they'll give you the extra height and motor skills you'll need. The only problem? All the pure humans who will hate you for your new abilities. Which is exactly where the protagonist, Owen Gray, a high school teacher with a simple brain implant that cured his childhood Epilepsy finds himself when the war between humans and amps begins.

The Good: It begins with a splat and continues on an uphill roller coaster ride for half of the book. Technically the writing is good, character descriptions and scenery are nice and easy to see in my mind. I enjoyed some of the characters more than others, like Lyle, a great bad guy. I love "good" bad guys, they make a good book to me; and I was not disappointed with Lyle, ruthless, cunning, and this side of sane. Nick was another standout for me, good sidekick.

The Bad: Pacing in the second half of the book is slow moving; details of construction work by exoskeleton wearing amps was a little boing. And, I found the book was overly convoluted with metaphors, for example, "Zenith" mode sounds so cool and I kind of imagined it like watching Neo in the matrix trilogy, but it wasn't near as fun; 3-2-1 eyelids flutter and lame high school teacher becomes an expert fighter. Seriously, by the time I read the final fight scene I was struggling to care about the characters and reading through to the end of this book like walking through a swamp, slow and trudging.  though many of the characters including the protagonist were underdeveloped.

Overall it's ok.
