What I'm reading right now

A romantic at heart, Violette Dubrinsky enjoys creating intricate situations and placing entertaining characters into them.  She is currently a full time graduate student and part-time writer. She enjoys creating stories with strong heroines and the leading heroes who "tame" them...and by tame, she means, learns to accept their stubborn, unchangeable ways. BD: What kind of atmosphere do you write in?

My ideal of working in bed (from Pinterest)

VD: I am such a loner. I think many writers to some extent which is what allows us to get into our heads and make things up. To write, I have to be in a space where I can access my bathroom, my kitchen, the TV, etc. so that's basically my bedroom. I love just sitting at my desk , on my laptop (like I am now) hacking away at the keyboard until my eyes burn, my head starts hurting and I start writing gibberish. That's when I know it's time to sleep.

BD: Details are divine, how do you keep track of them?

VD: I reread the story so many times to keep updated on the details. Because I don't get to do continuous writes as my Muse (be absorbed in thought)works on too many things at once, I'm always taking time to reread the story, see if something is in line or out of line with the character or the situation. If you constantly reread the story as you're working on it, you start to notice things...like the fact that you didn't describe what the heroine was wearing, whether that was even important.

BD: Which one of your books would you like to become a movie?

VD: Its a toss-up between Taken By Moonlight. I think TBM and The Masseuse, so since TBM was published first, I'll go with Taken By Moonlight. I think TBM has enough to make a pretty decent movie; witches, werewolves, vampires, a sinister evil villain, mystery/suspense and romance. PLUS, I think TBM would have an awesome action sequence if those fight scenes go the way I pictured in my head.

BD: Who is the book boyfriend of your life (Your charcter or someone else's)

VD: Right now, my book boyfriend is Ramsey Stone from The Masseuse. He's been commandeering all of my time and refusing to let me focus on my ex-boyfriends, Conall Athelwulf and Leon Arnaud. So, yep Ramsey's the one...for now. I honestly don't mind though, not when I'm picturing his character as the handsome Daniel Henney.

BD: Hardest character to write? Easiest?

VD: The hardest character I've ever written... well, that a tough question. To some extent, they're a difficult to write because you to have to keep track of their characteristics and it's easy to lose sight of that if you have a lot of characters in one story and if the story is novel sized. I'd probably have to say of my published

stories, Ramsey Stone (again) because his character is incredibly complex. The man you meet in The Masseuse starts out with certain characteristics and by the end of the story, readers realize that he's something else. In the sequel, which I'm writing now (you remember that the story that takes up all of my time lately making him my book boyfriend) he changes yet again to deal with different circumstances. Ramsey is incredibly layered but despite having these different traits, there has to be a core element that is distinctly Ramsey and that is what makes him such a fun challenge to write.

 How many ways do I love this paranormal romance writer? Let me begin with the heroes that she creates, Victor, Varian, and Conall made me fall in love with Ms. Dubrinsky's writing; they are all protective, yet sensitive companions to the dynamic heroines that she writes and I fall in love with. I guess you will never understand the depth of my devotion to her writing unless I tell you one simple truth; if she writes it, I buy it, no questions asked; not even price. Her books always amaze and entertain me, while evoking deep emotions within me as I read and learn of her characters world and their journey through them. I cry, laugh, and get mad at the characters and then do it all over again with the next book. Or with the same book since I tend to re-read her books over and over.

Warrior- This was like a slow rolling rock at the top of a snow covered mountain, it built up as it went along until by the end it was the mother of all interracial fantasies, in my opinion. And, what made it so good was not the "fantasy," but the characters; the heroine Jaiyson was strong, intelligent, and regal as the hot tempered princess that bowed to no man. Vulcan her match is hard and unmovable, except when it comes to Jaison. Their story is divine, if you haven't read this then PLEASE buy this book you WILL enjoy it; I have read it maybe three times. read my original review here!

Heny Cavill as Varian/Vulvan

Fav character: Varian. I'm drooling.

Taken by Moonlight- This is the book that made me a SUPERfan. Not that I do anything more than her other fans, but I am super and a fan hence SUPERfan. Click here to read this book and here to check out my original review.

Under a Crescent Moon- So this is the book that started it all for me. I have read this book at least five times, particularly the end; it makes my heart warm with out loud laughter. Then their is Victor. Dayum he's sexy, I never thought that I would say a that about a zombie. But Dayum! And this story is so good, it has a few twists and a couple of turns that had me at the edge of my seat, literally. I was like, "No, Don't talk to me I'm reading!" Yes I was at work and never said it out loud, but gave them the stink eye and thought it in my head really loud.  Click the link to read this book and click here to read my review.

Fast Friday 5 with....

Victoria H. Smith 

Author of the Eldaen chronicles and The Space between

Victoria H. Smith is one of my favorite authors of Young adult. Her writing style is very visual and her characters are more than just devices, they are "real." I asked her to do this interview for BD so we could find out more about her and the brilliant mind that brings these characters to life.

BD: Hardest character to write? Easiest?

Dennis Oh, my interpretation of Drake

VHS: I think Drake was definitely the most challenging. Not only was it difficult writing for a male, but he’s also an international adoptee. I had to really research to get into his head. Figure out what his struggles would be since he was adopted into a family that was not of color. The research was quite tedious, but gratifying as well. I learned so much about adoptees in the process and I’m happy to be able to share a snapshot into their world through my characters. I can only hope I did them justice.

Lacey and her character development were by far easier. I found her very relatable with wanting to put on a brave face and take care of the world around her. She finds it hard to ask for help and never does. Many of the cultural struggles she’s had I’ve had myself as a woman of color. I definitely felt like I understood her and that made it easier to write for her.

BD: What is your goal for next year?

VHS: I definitely want to put out at least two more IRs (interracial romances) next year. I have some ideas so I hope I can get them out there and share them.

 

BD: Who is the book boyfriend of your life? (Your character or someone else's)

VHS: It might sound weird but “R” from Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion. There’s just something about that zombie boy that is oh so dreamy. I think Julie (the heroine of Warm Bodies) sees that too. ;)

BD: Book you could read over and over

VHS: Right now, Love Script by Tiffany Ashley. I just really love her writing style.

BD: Mac or Windows?

VHS: Mac for sure. Once I switched, there was no going back for me.

Quick 5 with.........

Growing up in a small North Carolina town gave Dicey plenty of time to dream of Hollywood and vampires. She loved escaping in great movies and fiction books, and discovered she wasn't bad at writing either. But she didn't think that was going to pay the bills or that anyone would take her seriously.

So she graduated high school, college and graduate school, then moved to Texas for law school. After getting married and having two babies, she decided it was past time to start doing what she was passionate about.

BD:Favorite character of your creation?

Ezekiel (Zeek of Zeek's loving thorn), my intersexed vampire. I thrive hard to create unique characters. I have yet to hear of another vampire with male AND female genitalia. It pleases me to write a character so different, so daring. But it's not just about her physical make-up. She has so many layers. The insecure individual, starving for love and seeking acceptance, to the trained warrior, fearless in battle and selfless in aiding others. I'd love to meet her in real life.

BD: Details are divine, how do you keep track of them?

I'm one of those people who has to have wall decorations hung perfectly straight and symmetrical. Chair pillows have to be put back in the exact spot they were taken from. Dresser drawers and cabinets must be closed when not in use. Lights have to be off when no one's in the room. Oh, I have a long list of OCD must-haves. Yikes. But I revealed those HORRENDOUS things about myself to explain this fact: Details are extremely important to me. I keep a detailed plot outline and timeline for each book I write, along with pictures of actors that fit my characters. There's still room to deviate from my plans, but not on the critical, most important details. I also read my books over and over again so that I don't forget the tone of my stories, character voices, or plot devices.

BD: Look into my crystal ball:
Which one of your books would you like to become a movie?

I'd like to see all of my books onscreen, but if I had to pick one--that's currently written--to become a movie, it would be SHAMEFUL. That's about a married mother of three who has an affair with a sixteen-year-old. If the casting is just right on that one, it would be wonderfully naughty. I think The Narcoleptic Vampire Series would work better as a television show. *HBO--"Call me."*

BD: Best fan encounter
I'm still a relatively new, unknown author, so my encounters usually occur in social media. My best fan encounters occur every time a reader sends me a tweet, comments on my FB page, emails me, texts me, posts a heart-felt review, shares my book links, or blogs about how much they enjoyed one of my books. I love it all! 

BD: Do you practice the moves of your love scenes before you write them?

I wish...but no, not most of them. It's all in my head, from my imagination. Once, I attempted to wrap a seat belt around hubby's neck to get the logistics right for a Willow/Remi scene in SLEEPY WILLOW'S BONDED SOUL, but hubby wasn't hearing that, for some reason. You've read the books. You know I'd get arrested for at least half that stuff.
