Quick 5 with LV Lewis.....

I am so excited to share this interview with you! L.V. Lewis is the author of "The Ghetto Girl Romance Quadrilogy" which I am OBSESSED with.  A married parent of four residing in South Georgia, Lewis loves romances that involve interracial couples because L. V. envisions a world when it won't matter to anyone else who you love because, despite the civil rights movement and a biracial US President, we aren't there yet.

L. V. and spouse are political junkies. One leans right, the other left. Thankfully, this has never caused any issues in their relationship. If Lewis told you which of them was Democrat and which was Republican, you just might be able to figure out which is Dominant and which is submissive. 

MB: Favorite character of your creation?

LVL: Clara Lee Beale is my favorite character because she's very complex. She is the only character whose voice I heard very clearly in my head and she sounds very much like the actress Jenifer Lewis when she talks. Clara was in an interracial relationship long before her daughter and I believe she understood the difficulties her daughter could reasonably face with a man like Tristan more than the average person gives her credit for. I love how she's a prickly woman who doesn't surround herself with a lot of people or foolishness.

MB: Favorite George RR character?

LVL: It's a three-way tie, I love Tyrion, the gimp, because as a little person he was mistreated by family as well as other people, but he realized early on, despite his penchant for loose women, wine and his tendency to over-imbibe, he needed to educate himself because his life would be hard even though he was the son of the lion of the Lannister household. I think it's Tywin's treatment of him that made him such a sympathetic character for me (and the fact that he realized what a treacherous bitch his sister was before anyone else.)

Tei Iku's Jon Snow &  Ghost

Jon Snow is a favorite, because he's another character who was ill-treated because of the circumstances of his parentage (or what people believe his parentage is). I rooted for him early on, because I hated how his stepmother treated him, and how he felt forced to take the Black because that was the only honorable future he could see for himself. Winter is indeed coming! (I will always be a Winterfell girl.)

My final fave is Arya Stark. This brave little girl was always smarter than her elder sister. She's remained resilient after having to witness the death of her father, then traveling across a war-torn Westeros trying to get back home to her family, which is scattered to the four winds, and she doesn't know this until she gets to camp after camp and her reunion with them is thwarted at every turn.

I hope you know I had a hard time narrowing this down to three because I have love for the most changed character in the series, Jaime Lannister and for his friend the giant female knight (Brienne of Tarth), and for the young Dragon Queen, as well. However, I stand with my three-way tie for now.

MB: I love Jamie and Brienne as well! Tyrion is my favorite character, he never lets his disability define him.

MB: You drink haterade (or they make you want to write better) when you read?

LVL: Toni Morrison. That sister has an amazing body of work that has been my mainstay for years. My aspiration is to write mainstream literary fiction that will appeal to a wide variety of people. I think Ms. Morrison does this, so she does make me want to write better when I read her work.

MB: Do you practice the moves of your love scenes before you write them?

LVL: Actually, I do not because my characters do some very kinky things, but I will admit to engaging to make my description of sensory detail more authentic. LOL

MB: Not ashamed to say that reading Exit Strategy gave me some fun ideas to share with Hubby!

MB: Earth wind and fire or parliament funk?

LVL: Both. Sometimes, my writing is mellow and orchestral, like the elements, and other times I have to make my funk the P-Funk, because I have to get funked up. So, it really just depends on my mood and the vibe I'm going for.

Fast Friday 5 with...........

Cheryl is an author, a blogger and an adult educator. She writes fiction under the penname of a private hero, her mother, Olivia Gaines Aaron. Cheryl holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master's in Organizational Management. Her non-fiction works are focused on helping writers perfect their craft. Cheryl co-authored Musings: A Book of Poetry by Aaron Flanders; and authored My Next Best Seller: A Novel Writer's Journal and My Writing Journal.

Under the penname Olivia Gaines, Cheryl has authored the short story series The Bounty (2009), Vengeance (2012) and The Bounty Hunter (2013). The Slice of Life Series is new in the Olivia Gaines portfolio which includes, Two Nights In Vegas, The Perfect Man, The Basement of Mr. McGee and Letter to My Mother.

BD:Who did you use as your muse for  Saxton? Odessa?

OG: There is no muse for my main characters.  Each character is uniquely written, but I have met women like Odessa.  We travel a great deal and have seen and met accomplished women of color who often travel alone.  These women, sans girlfriends, choose to go alone because their friends never have any money, can’t get a sitter, or “If my man can’t go with me, he said I can’t go.”  ( I have experienced that one first hand!)

Odessa is actually traveling with a tour group and she chooses to step out on her own to buy some pottery for her back porch.  She dreams of a man who resembles Saxton the night before, which makes her gravitate to him when she sees him at the cantina.

Saxton, Saxton, Saxton.  This character was named by my husband. Saxton is written as the typical anti-hero who is damaged and seeking redemption.  He is a good guy, in a bad situation that feels as if he is fading into the seedy world he was contracted to infiltrate. If he saves the girl, he just may save himself.

BD:  How much research and what kind did you for the characters and cartels? Brothels?

OG: A great deal of research was done on the cartels.  The Nuevo Generacíon is real. Renteria is real. There were 20,000 people who went missing last year in Mexico and human trafficking is also very real. There is a market for every appetite, and there is always a buyer. This story deals with a very real problem in a humorous way. 

As a woman of color, or any woman, when traveling, stateside or otherwise, you have to be very aware of your surroundings. The US is one of the few countries where a woman of color has a voice and is not property or a commodity.

BD:    Where did you learn about firearms?

OG: I am a former soldier, which is why Odessa was not written as one.  Big Sarge is based on a Sergeant Major I had in ROTC in college. He taught and groomed me as a young Army officer to stand my ground among men and not show fear.  Being taught and trained by those types of men really changes your perspective on who is a strong man and which men are playing tough.

Odessa is written as she is because her father is a strong man; those guys, although unscrupulous, are not really bad. They are men with guns, whom, when confronted with women with hand held weapons, dropped theirs and took off. Her father, who is not a foil, will play a much larger role in the upcoming series, which is why he was introduced in the first installment.

BD"  Are you planning to make this a series? How many books? body count? sex?

OG: As a writer, there is always a critic.  My first installment in the Slice of Life Series, was nothing but sex.  The second installment, the sex was pulled back and replaced with a really good story. However, my readers were

obsessed with Marc and Nadine, and I wanted to introduce two new characters for them to connect with, enter Saxton and Odessa.  This was a bonus read for my online community of bibliophiles. I omitted the sex and wrote a truly good story, but then the readers were mad that there was no sex. There will be some in the next book, but the story is about the story, not about sex.

I am uncertain of how many books will be in the Blakemore Files series. I have an idea, but it is too soon to state.

I am wary about body count.  Taking a life is never easy and there are ramifications which follow, so I have a surprise for readers in the next installment of “Shopping with Mrs. Blakemore,” as they head into Panama.

There were several symbols in the story, and two of my favorites are the priest and the children with the basket of rings.

BD:  Who was your favorite character? Renteria

OG: The Priest symbolizes that even though these men are doing illegal activities, they still take the time out to worship.  The Priest is their connection to the good inside of us all.  I left the window open for reader to imagine the Priest was at the villa to hear Renteria’s confession, but when alerted by Mateo, he was asked to stay to perform the ceremony.  In the same section, you have the children with the basket of rings. Renteria has held on to these trinkets from people whom they have abducted. If there is a basket of rings, then there is a basket of watches, purses, credit cards and so forth. Each ring, represents a lost life.

Renteria is my favorite character because he is the one who will grow the most and the one character who will and can change. You will see him again. He is written as someone who has inherited the family business and is stuck with having to employ his screwed up cousin and a man he does not trust. In the business, he has tried to create a sense of family by building a cantina, and having women on site for the men, but his family is dysfunctional, and he knows it.  He sees Odessa as an opportunity to grow his business, which is why he makes her the job offer, even after she leaves.

He wants to be a legitimate business man.

I have so many great things to say about Ms. Pace and her writing. Where to begin? There is no one place to start, so I will just say this; I have read everything that she has written except for two books, and they are my 'to read' list. For me this author is up there with Anne Rice and Stephen King, but a little better because she writes more diverse characters with 'real' issues. And as a staunch non-girl (Don't send me flowers, or chocolates. I prefer a foot or scalp massages) that lives in suburbia, Ms. Pace has introduced me to homeless characters, heroes with disabilities and made physical deformities sexy. Don't believe me? Read Beast, I dare you not to want to lick that scar too! Yes she gets points for being a fellow Ohioan, but more points for teaching me to enjoy reading  people with 'real' problems. My top 5  P.P. books:

The ones that know are out to kill her for being turned by a rogue and her allies happen to be her food. In order to survive the Vampire Nation, Kim will have to outsmart and out think her enemies. The last thing Kim wants or needs are the three gorgeous men vying for her attention; one chocolate, one vanilla and the last caramel. How do you choose between the gorgeous protector, the charming and tasty food, and the scary dangerous elder?

How dare you Madam!

Not even halfway through I had to write this author and fuss. I was reading on my break and crying; my timer went off and I had to get myself together before I could get back to my desk. That is how good this book is!

I really got into this book right away, the story of Elasaid the target of a powerful devil clan. They bind her, taking her name, her voice, and her magic. Shackled inside the cold, stone walls of the devil’s prison, tortured and abused, she pray

s for a death she knows will not come.

A few times I had to give myself a break, some of these scenes were really intense, but the payoff and meeting Raven helped me get through some of the more 'raw' scenes. Raven, a warlock and powerful protector gives a casual promise to his king’s Council results in a life-changing discovery. He must free her the witch or his very life will be over.

Freed, Elsaid must learn how to trust again. But Raven with the face of a dark angel is hiding something — a secret that will give the witch the strength to help her to fulfill her destiny.

As she comes into her power, she will discover a pure truth that allows her to save herself and the man she loves.

This is the first book in the By the Fates trilogy. 

Warning: This book contains disturbing and potentially offensive scenes including forced imprisonment, rape and physical and mental torture. Suitable for adult audiences only.

The Good:

This book is very well written, some of the 'raw' scenes I described above could have really turned me off, but they were tastefully done. You feel the heroine's pain, without being too weighed down. And later, when she is free, you will cry happy tears of joy with her as she discovers life. If that is not enough, than let me tell you that the characters are likeable and well written and the plot is a good pace so you can be introduced into this new world without having to go back to the beginning trying to define a term. I love bad guys and this had more than a few for me to choose from, Yay! Also a plus is the fact that there were no screaming errors; the book is well edited and there are no glaring plot holes either.

This book is told in the first person narrative of both main characters, I know that a lot of people don’t care for first person; I'm not one of them. However, for those that do,  I felt that the break-up of point view really helps with the FP.

Diversity: Raven is Dusky, Marcus is dark skinned. Thank you for writing good diverse characters

The bad:

 I just felt that the bad guys need a better comeuppance.

I’m jus sayin:

These bad guys especially deserved a terrible ending.

The good:

I found this to be a really solid read. The author is a good writer with a strong voice. Her characters are well thought out with understandable motivations. In other words, as readers we’re provided enough back story to understand the why the characters choose the decisions they do. I also liked that the story focused more on the relationship between the H/H and not so much on the mythology of ancient Egyptian deities. And Tia’s power, YASSS! I love the whole situation (You have to read it or visit my blog to figure out what I’m talking about).

I found a few problems, so I can’t use the term ‘bad’

A few minor grammatical errors

The story was a little predictable

I recently had a conversation with an author I enjoy, here is my end of the shenanigans.......

We both love Mr. Henry Cavill and I explained about the muse of her book series.......

Me. cool. I have seen and drooled over Superman. my gay husband (not to be confused with my actual husband) was distracted by his chest hair, it marred the suit. I was like what ?!?! I wanted to run my hands through that hair. I volunteered to be his official manscaper, what I lack in formal training, I make up in enthusiasm.

Me. I didn't submit my resume, I felt that his "people" would not be amused by my enthusiasm or lack of training.

Yes, I know how silly I am.

Conquered by the author

Balian is a dragon shifter, An enemy of Princess Kisah's people, but once he glimpses her beauty he will risk his life to claim his destined bride.

Kisah sees the golden warrior’s swagger in battle, glorious and beautiful, but its determination to  woo her that captures her heart.

The novella's sample got me all hot and bothered and the book had much of the same affect. 

A sexy stranger, a brutal contest, a mocha skinned princess with long flowing hair Ahem, sounds like this was this based on me so you know I devoured it!

Kudos to Fox, loved this book so much that I bought another and another to read and enjoy!

Ravaged by Jaide fox

C-mac and I were huge fans of the Starz original series "Spartacus" in all its glory. Obviously we watched for different reasons;

Cmac: "What did he just say?"
Me: "there's dialog in this show?"
Cmac: "Be serious, What did he say"
Me: "Seriously, I'm only watching for the man meat, beefcake, to ogle these studs muffins. Stop sighing, you sound so exasperated"
Cmac: "So degrading. Do you ever think of anything else? 
Me: "shopping and shoes. Stop rolling your eyes! You asked"
Cmac: "I'll just rewind it"
Me: "ooh, goody! More muffins!

So with the last episode of the muffin show having been aired in march I was missing a little blood and sex in my life. Enter "Ravaged (pleasure masters(futuristic BDSM Alpha Shifters)" by Jaide fox.

The story of a gladiator winning the ultimate prize, a willing sex slave. Did I mention that he has a magical member? Uhm, yeah! Read and enjoyed!

Like finding a good man

Good books, like good men are hard to find.

Good men with jobs and good credit, like consistently talented author's are harder to find

Yet, I have met the works of Naima Simone ( have you read "Sweet Ultimatum? read my review). Her latest book, Gabriel: Secrets and Sins was offered to me as an ARC; I pounced. Literally, I was that girl in elementary class with her hand held high, squirming, and begging the teach; pick me! Please pick me!

And, Entangled Publishing obliged and I dove in!

Leah Bannon is an ex-cop turned PI investigating the unsolved murder of her beloved Uncle Richard  Gabriel Devlin—-the man she loves but can never have—-inexplicably stands in her way.

Only four people know the truth about Richard’s mysterious disappearance—-Gabriel and three childhood friends, who happen to all know our heoine, but have sworn to take that secret to the grave. A hidden enemy draws deadly secrets to the light, even if he has to kill to make it happen.

Yass, this is so good. I heart words, prose, poetry, floetry and this book has all of that wrapped up in a good mystery with a not so typical heroine.

I love that sweet, exotically beautiful Leah is the hardened cop, so strong, yet feminine. I like that Gabriel is falling apart, needing Leah, yet too stubborn to admit that it is time to move forward and take that chance before its too late.

Wow, I enjoyed this book. Seriously- can't wait to read this again and again.

I couldn't make it past the sample for this book. There were too many characters with backgrounds that I didn't like this sample enough to buy the book.

This was just an okay read for me. I found some problems that kep me from loving the book:

Repetitive
Wrong words
Needs better editing
The correct term is stylist, men don't go to hairdressers. Barbers or stylists

But overall, I enjoyed the read enough to continue reading Mrs. Langlais; i mean come on, she has a book titled "Delicate freakin Flower" I have to love her just for that!

Loving Zeek & Thorn

I was so excited when Dicey Grenor announced this novella on her facebook page. I am a huge fan of the Narcoleptic Vampire series and of the author herself. Mrs. Grenor is a good at creating smart, sassy, sexy characters that are complex, yet endearing. So, I knew this novella was going to be in my Kindle library as soon as it came out.

I was gifted this novella from Mrs. Grenor, but my opinion of her work was not influenced by her generosity.

So let's get into this review:    

Zeek is one of Willow's grooms, the lone sister in the troupe of men that made Willow a master vampiress.  She loves her second life of health and strength after a lifetime of ostracism and illness. Enter Thorn, a preacher left behind after the rapture. A man trying to live right after a lifetime of doing so many people wrong.

When the two meet Thorn tries to resist the temptation of his favorite drug and Zeek struggles to show Thorn the real her, in all her glory.

Zeek's spirit is beautiful despite being battered over an over by abuse and ignorance. Her loyalty, strong beliefs and loving nature make it hard not to fall for her character. At first I didn't like Thorn, how could I? He really didn't have that many redeeming qualities at first, he's so concerned with her appearance, but then we get to watch him fall in love with someone he totally doesn't expect. He sees Zeek's spirit and falls in love with HER, not her body or what she can do for him. But the raw person inside, which is all she ever wanted in a lover.

I'm just saying:

The adult scene in this book is may test some of you, but they are not too graphic and done with class. Personally I found them to be tender and sweet, the slow burn of eroticism is still there, but handled with such care that it makes you smile affectionately cause you understand the motivations and the elation that the characters fell when they finally get down to the dirty.

Favorite character: 
Vance. I have a girl crush on her now. Yeah she's sexy and can kick your ass, but she's also nurturing and true to herself and her friends.

Monroe. OK, maybe it's the perv in me but his line, "It took me two hours, but I finally put the Mrs. to bed" made my insides feel good.

Favorite line:
"The only thing worse than a horny vampire is a hungry one"

Complaints: I wanted more!

Overall:

This book is a blast!  Sexy, raw, and human. The real humanity, not that fluff and stuff of gallant pretty people that pay lip service. But, the humanity that makes you look in the mirror and tell yourself to be a more accepting person. Read it, challenge yourself to expand your literary horizons, you might discover that we're ALL really not that far apart from one another.

The Space Between by Victoria H. Wilson

I sighed a lot during this book, these characters and their romance was so wonderfully written that I even cried at the end. No, thats a lie. I blubbered with snot and ugly face.

Drake is an Asian American adopted into a wealthy and influential caucasian family. Lacey is a bi-racial girl struggling to make ends meet while her stars are aligning.

Their paths cross and fireworks start, but they end in police sirens. Can two people from very different backgrounds come togehter in the space between?

Uhm, yes. And I enjoyed every word of it.

Have you ever fallen truly, madly, heels behind head in love with a character? I have several times. And Drake is now on my Hall Pass list. Damn he's sexy; deep voice, mahogany eyes, warm heart and a strong libido. I kinda want to be Lacey.

Fav line: "She took it like she wanted it. Like she owned it"
Errors:

Location. 2044  "..do you mind if I braid you hair?"

Location 3656 "Cooper came back and handled me a..."

Location. "Standing stark still, his mom didn't say a work."

Locatio 4853 "..it was hard to image that a small..."

Falling for a good book...

Edge of the falls by Nazarea Andrews

Sabah is an orphan child taken in by the mysterious ‘Mistress’ after being abdoned  to the slums as a child. Soon she grows up and falls in love, knowing her place living outside the great city nearby.

But when a ban-wolf saves her life, Sabah begins to change.

The book synopsis says that it’s a romantic retelling of Beauty and the Beast, but I found this book to be so much more than just a children’s story. I fell in love with the world that the author created. Not that it’s a magical fairytale with talking teacups and other server ware, a dark dystopia where a beautiful girl has more than just furry beasts to worry about when civilized gentry can change one’s fate on a whim.

Sabah is the best kind of heroine; fiercely passionate and strong, but also willing to be open and vulnerable when she finally sets her sites on what her heart desires.

I felt myself wrapped in Sabah’s story; fearing, feeling, betrayed, but also growing as Sabah did. I would recommend this story to anyone that enjoys a good well rounded read. The characters are magnificently written  and the story is thoroughly entertaining.

He's so my type....

He's so shy by Lena Matthews

Gillian and Lennon are co-workers. She mistakes him for being shy and decides to make him her project. He plays along. This is a good dirty book! I love the character, both the hero and heroine are well thought out with their motivations clearly made at the beginning of the story. Gillian likes the 'white guy' but won't admit it, so she takes him out for drinks and finds out that he's not shy at all. I admit my favorite character is her friend, she could by my wing-women any time. The big reveal in this book involves a party at a friends house, No I would NEVER participate in that kind of party. But the freak in me enjoyed reading about it. I also loved that the shero of this book was not afraid to find her love; I'm over women who run away from a good man. i would love to read more from this series.

There were a few errors:

Location 343 "And blind as a bat is she thought he could possible find any.....---> should be "possibly"

Location 1273 "Every since their little office escapade..." --> "Ever since"

The error at location 1373 is too adult to quote, but the wrong word is used, should be "fingering"

My new favorite word and  Favorite line of the book, Location 1226 "a fast convert to the religion of assianity"- Yeah, I will be using this to describe C-mac cause I converted him personally!
